Acne- Can It Darken The Face?

There is a belief amongst many of us that acne darkens the skin. Let us find out.

How does skin get its color? It is the melanin pigment in skin that gives color to the skin. In people with dark colored skin, the density of melanin is high. In people with fair skin the density is low. Therefore your skin will get darker only if more melanin is produced. For example, sun exposure causes more melanin production and the skin gets tanned. Other conditions such as Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation and Melasma also cause dark patches on the skin.

In case of acne, only the skin on the site of acne is affected. This skin becomes a darkened spot as the acne resolves. This color is called PIH (Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation ) PIH disappears after some days.

In acne, all the skin of the face does not become dark. Only acne spots may change color as explained above. They will slowly fade away unless a scar forms.

Acne & Sunshine

Despite the belief that acne gets cleared by sunshine, there is no scientific evidence to this. Excess sun can damage your skin rather than treating acne.
