Causes


Oily skin is caused by excess production of sebum. Read more about sebum. With more production of sebum, the skin appears oily. The oiliness is more apparent on areas of the body that have more sebaceous glands such as scalp, face, back, chest, etc. The sebum protects our skin from dehydration. But excess of it causes problems.

The main cause of excess sebum production is hormonal imbalance. That is why teenagers begin noticing oiliness as soon as they reach puberty. With hormonal fluctuation through life, one can experience oily skin at certain stages and find normal skin at other stages.
