Hair Loss: Overview

Hair Loss

Most of us are worried about hair loss. Every one of us is threatened by the very idea and when it begins, we look around for quick solutions. There are no quick solutions. But understanding about hair, causes and treatment of hair loss can surely help us get our hair back. Let us first understand how the hair grows.

Hair Loss- Hair Growth Cycle
Neither does all the scalp hair grow at the same time, nor all of it shed at the same time. If that were the case, all of us would go bald at the same time and then regrow hair. What happens is different. Some hair is falling, some is growing and some is resting. The hair growth phase or the 'anagen' lasts for two to six years. During this period, the hair is growing. About 90% of our scalp hair is growing at any point of time. After the hair completes its growth, it enters the 'catagen' phase that lasts for few weeks. This is the resting phase. After completing this phase, the hair begins to fall and a new hair grows in its place. Because of this cycle, we all lose about 50 to 100 strands of hair every day. In their place, new hair grows. What we shed daily in normal course is not hair loss, but shedding of old hair and growing of new hair in its place. This is the hair growth cycle.
